Type
The Rosal limestone is a beige limestone, essentially calciclastic and oolitic, with micritic cement and rare sparite. The exploited beds are part of the Valverde Formation (Bathonian age, Middle Jurassic), very well developed at the Limestone Massif of Estremadura (Mesocenozoic Occidental Border).
Appearance
The Rosal limestone has a light beige colour, fine grain and uniform background. It presents some slight dark shadings in some of its area. In terms of hardness it is considered a soft natural stone. It also presents a slight veinage, where the main variations are with more or less veinage or cut in favour or against the veinage.
Location
The Rosal limestone is explored around the area of Codaçal – Porto de Mós, which is located in Serra D´Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park. This area is located in the centre of Portugal, about 100 kilometres north of Lisbon.
Codaçal is located in the heart of Serra D´Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park, which is still included in the ring of limestone extraction area – also known as the main ornamental limestone quarrying centre in Portugal. |
